Frequency analysis of tumor-reactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes in peripheral blood of a melanoma patient vaccinated with autologous tumor cells

1994

A limiting-dilution assay was developed and used to determine the frequency of autologous tumor-reactive cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL) in peripheral blood of a melanoma patient MZ2, who has been free of detectable disease since several years. In this patient, the frequencies of tumor-reactive CTL spontaneously varied only by a factor of 1.5. After vaccinations with autologous mutagenized and lethally irradiated tumor cells a two- to tenfold increase in frequencies of tumor-reactive CTL was found within the first 2 weeks. Thereafter, CTL frequencies returned to values measured prior to vaccinations. We conclude, that the limiting-dilution assay applied in this study can detect changes in the…

The Vascularization of Experimental and Human Primary Tumors: Comparative Morphometric and Morphologic Studies

1998

The importance of the blood vessel system in solid tumors has given rise to an increasing interest in this system as a direct target for tumor therapy, i.e. vascular targeting (Denekamp, 1984). Furthermore, its importance as a route for delivery of anticancer drugs (chemo- and immunotherapies) or photosensitizers (photodynamic laser therapy), as well as its modulatory influences on radiotherapy and hyperthermia — the former greatly depending on the amount of oxygen available, the latter on heat transfer — are evident. Numerous studies on the energy metabolism of solid tumors (Vaupel et al., 1987, 1989) have pointed out the functional importance of the blood vessel system and stress the need…

Relation between autoradiographically measured blood flow and ATP concentrations obtained from imaging bioluminescence in tumors following hypertherm…

1993

The effects of moderate local hyperthermia (43.3 degrees C/30 min) on regional blood flow and regional ATP distribution in the amelanotic hamster melanoma A-Mel-3 were investigated by high-resolution techniques. Blood flow and ATP concentrations were measured simultaneously in treated and untreated tumors and in adjacent tissues by means of (14C)-Iodoantipyrine autoradiography and quantitative imaging bioluminescence in consecutive tissue sections at 3, 12 and 24 hr following treatment. Digital image processing and the use of a special algorithm allowed the regional interrelationship of the 2 parameters to be quantified. Measurements revealed a great heterogeneity of blood flow and ATP betw…

Oral amelanotic melanoma: a case report

2014

Objectives. Primary oral melanoma is a very rare malignancy, representing about 0.5% of all melanomas, characterized by a wide clinical-histological variability and a very aggressive behavior. Aim of the present study is to describe a case of oral amelanotic melanoma, an infrequent variant with a poorer prognosis than that of pigmented melanomas for a more aggressive biological behavior and frequent delays for the correct diagnosis and for starting the treatment. Case report. A 53-year-old white man referred at the Department Surgical, Oncological and Oral Sciences for a macular, scarsely pigmented lesion with irregular margins, located on anterior region of hard palate. The lesion, complet…

Ziliarkörpermetastase als Ersthinweis auf ein kleinzelliges Bronchialkarzinom1

2000

BACKGROUND About 3-10% of patients suffering from metastatic disease develop metastatic choroidal tumors. In this case report ocular symptoms were the first sign of a systemic malignancy. CASE REPORT A 65-year old man complained of an increasing painful redness of his left eye. He showed a white mass with 10 mm in thickness in the temporal chamber angle with "pseudohypopyon" and secondary glaucoma. Because of increasing pain the eye was removed. Histologic examination showed a small cell carcinoma of the ciliary body with high malignancy, which most probably has to be seen as a metastasis of a carcinoma of the lung, which was detected by internal examination concurrently. In addition, a met…
